We are closing out our celebration of Black History Month with Ms. Heidi teaching you how to make Maya Angelou’s buttermilk biscuits. Learn a little bit about the amazing Maya Angelou and bake some yummy biscuits at the same time! Show us pictures of your biscuits in the comments below!
Ingredients:
- 4 cups of flour plus extra for kneading dough
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 6 teaspoons of baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 cup of lard
- 2 cups of buttermilk
- Rolling pin
- Baking sheet
- Bowls
- Circle cutter, biscuit cutter, or floured glass
Steps:
1. Sift together 4 cups of flour, ½ teaspoon of salt, 6 teaspoons of baking powder, 1 teaspoon of baking soda
2. Slowly add in one cup of lard mixing until it looks like coarse cornmeal
3. Pour in two cups of buttermilk
4. Dust flour on a cutting board and knead your dough, add extra flour to help with sticking
5. Use a rolling pin to roll out your dough around half an inch thick
6. Cut out your biscuits with a floured glass, a biscuit cutter, or a circle cutter and place on an ungreased cookie sheet
7. Bake for around 20-25 minutes or until golden brown
