Materials:
- 4 Hard Boiled Eggs
- Vinegar
- Baking Soda
- Water
- Food Coloring
- Muffin Tin
- Paint Brush
- Tablespoon Measurement
Step 1: Add a tablespoon of baking soda to five spaces in your muffin tin.
Step 2: Add a tablespoon of water to the baking soda spaces to create a paste-like consistency.
Step 3: Add your choice of food coloring to each paste. You can add different drops of different colors and make new shades. The more drops of food coloring you add the more pigmented your eggs will come out. Mix well.
Step 4: Once fully mixed, place your eggs into the other empty spaces of your tin. You will paint your eggs with these paste mixtures. You do not have to use up all the mixtures but you should layer on as much as you can.
Step 5: Now that your eggs are fully painted, add a tablespoon of vinegar to seal the dye and watch the reaction take place! This reaction will give your eggs a cool dyed effect.
Step 6: Place to the side, outside of your vinegar. Let them dry. You can wipe off any excess baking soda after they dry.
You’re done.
What is the science behind this?
What we saw with the baking soda and vinegar is called a chemical reaction.
A chemical reaction is when two or more substances come together and react chemically to create a new substance. They transform chemically.
The baking soda in our paste reacted when the vinegar was poured onto it. The bubbles made all the colors mix and we got this cool effect on our eggs!
