Mae Jemison was the first African American woman in space and served as Mission Specialist to the Space Shuttle Endeavour. If you haven’t read or listened to the picture book Mae Among the Stars, we recommend it. This book is based on her childhood and we read it in the Virtual Clubhouse, view it here. In this story Mae makes a rocket out of cardboard and we are going to do that too! Show us your rockets in the comments below.
Materials:
- TP Roll
- Tin Foil
- Tape
- Glue stick
- Construction Paper
- Pen/Pencil
Step 1: Measure out length of tin foil with your TP roll
Step 2: Roll your piece of tin foil around your TP tube and tape into place. Cut off any access.
Step 3: Take one of your pieces of construction paper and cut out a circle. Fold the circle in half, unfold and then fold in half on the other side. This will give you four equal sections to cut out
Step 4: Cut out the 4 parts and start to tape them to one side of the TP roll. Go slowly and work carefully to create a point at the top. This will be the top part of your rocket
Step 5: Take the same color of construction paper that you used for the cone at the top of your rocket and cut out 3 right triangles
Step 6: Using your glue stick attach the triangles to your rocket an equal distance apart
Step 7: Take a different color of construction paper, draw and cut four circles
Step 8: Glue your circles on to your rocket
Step 9: Congratulations, you’ve finished your rocket!
