Alvin Ailey was a choreographer who founded the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 1958, which is now known as the Ailey School located in New York. He was a dancer, choreographer, director and activist. He created a multi-racial modern dance ensemble that popularized modern dance around the world. His work fused several types of dance, as well as theater. His choreography spreads global awareness of Black life in America.

Ailey’s most famous work is; Revelations. Staff member Ms. Christina was able to see this performed by the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater company. She says that it was, “amazing and that the dancers really work off each other expertly”. Ailey’s company is one of the top modern dance companies in the world and it also gives the opportunity for new choreographies to shine and showcase their work. Ailey’s dancers perform contemporary and modern choreography from around the world.

Ailey passed away in 1989, but his legacy lives on through his school, company and choreography. He chose to share his story and the stories of others through dance. Ailey believed that, “Dance is for everyone”.
