Try out this walking water science experiment, with just a few materials. Let us know how it goes in the comments below.

Materials:

  1. Two sheets of paper towel
  2. Food coloring (yellow and blue)
  3. Water
  4. Three clear cups

  1. Pour water into two cups. Place the empty cup in between the two cups with water.
  1. Add food coloring to the two cups of water. (blue and yellow)
  1. Roll your paper towel, place one half of it into the 1st cup and the other half into the empty cup. Take the other rolled paper towel and place half of it into the empty cup and half into the cup with water.
  2. Watch the cups! What is happening?
You should start seeing the water crawl up the rolled up paper towel. After a few minutes, you will see the water begin to make its way into the empty cup! Because there are two different colors, they begin to mix in the middle cup. We now see green!

Your end result should look like this!

This is called capillary action. Capillary action is the process of a certain liquid flowing without the help of any external forces. (like gravity)
