Create a boat out of paper, see if it floats and see how many objects it can hold when it floats!

Materials:

  1. Rectangular piece of paper
  2. Mixing Bowl with Water
  3. Figurines, toys, etc.

Step 1:  Fold your paper in half horizontally, hamburger fold

Step 2:  Fold the bottom corner towards the middle of the paper, do this for both sides

Step 3:  Turn your paper do that the point is away from you

Step 4:  Fold the bottom rectangle up at the bottom of the triangle that you have formed

Step 5:  Flip the whole paper over and fold the bottom rectangle on the other side, same as before

Step 6:  Open the newly created fold and fold both corners in and then refold

Step 7:  Open the newly created fold and fold both corners in and then refold. You will then open up the origami and flatten

Step 8:  Fold the bottom point up towards the opposite tip, flip over and do the same fold on the other side.

Step 9:  Open up the bottom again and flatten into a diamond shape

Step 10:  At the top of the diamond gently pull the sides down and flatten

Step 10:  Push the bottom of the boat down a little and pull the sail in the middle. Congratulations you have finished your boat!

Step 11:  Now that you have finished your boat, begin the experiment. Fill your mixing bowl with water and place your boat in the middle. It might move around, this is okay

Step 12:  Slowly add your chosen weight to the boat, one item at a time.

Step 13:  Count the number of weights that you were able to add to your boat

Questions (put your answers in the comments below):

  1. How many weights were you able to add to your boat?
  2. Do you think if you made the boat bigger could you add more weight?
